Profile

Stephen was born at Chard in Somerset in 1947 and trained at the Somerset College of Art in the late sixties. He was fortunate enough to spend the 1970s working alongside highly acclaimed artist Patrick Larking R.P.R.O.I. In this way Stephen came to admire and respect such artists as Sickert, George Clausen and Augustus John, all of whom had taught and befriended Pat while he was studying at the Royal Academy.
Now based in the beautiful county of Devon, Stephen finds that much of his inspiration stems from the idyllic West Country landscape that he has loved since his boyhood. His soft-hued pastel images use muted colours and finely observed details to create tranquil evocations of the British countryside and coastline.
Stephen has exhibited extensively at the New English Art Club, the Royal West of England Academy, and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. He has also held several successful solo shows at galleries in London and across the UK and the United States. In addition, as a respected member of the Royal Society of British Artists, he has published numerous articles on oil painting for International Artist Magazines.
